Welcome to Nerdpunk.

What is nerdpunk? Well, it's kind of a play on all the subculture names that keep popping up (like steampunk, dieselpunk, clockpunk, cyberpunk) which interest me. For me, the addition of "punk" to the end of something doesn't mean rebelliousness and loud music; it's kind of doing-it-yourself, individuality beyond the "if it's popular I can't like that". And while geek chic is already a term out there, I've always liked the word nerd. It's just a word that works for me.
Why I started this comm is mostly because I really like style and fashion and dwelling comms--but I started feeling a little limited by the hip and sometimes repetitive aesthetics. It's not limited to the style people; too often I see my nerdy brethren in the requisite jeans and t-shirt uniform, their rooms plastered haphazardly with posters. I figured that if I sort of straddled two major "worlds" there were probably other people like that. Heck, I had friends like that! Nerds shouldn't be ashamed to be stylish. And stylistas shouldn't be ashamed to be nerds.
This is a place for inspiration, discussion, advice--whatever. I honestly have no idea what directions it'll take. I think that I'll have some directed discussion posts to get it started, but my hope is for it to take off and evolve on its own. It's a science experiment with sociology. It's art without a manual.
Have fun!
