Makeup Advice Sought!
Jan. 19th, 2012 04:16 pmOK, so I have recently developed this new interest and I figured this would be a good place to start.
I recently got a really serious haircut -- went from shoulder-length to a pixie cut, basically. It was actually a huge change for me as I've had mostly the same hair since I can remember, and it was the first time I'd ever gotten a haircut that I really WANTED. I love the way it looks, and now suddenly I have developed this huge interest in all things appearance-related. I've always liked fashion, but now I'm doing my hair every day and putting things in it and generally being way more femme than I'm used to being.
I'm also been wanting to try wearing makeup more often. Problem is, the only times I've ever worn makeup with any regularity were 1) when I was a baby bat who still thought pure black lipstick was flattering, and 2) when I was LARPing. Neither of these are really conducive to developing a wide variety of makeup skills.
I've got some friends I can hopefully ask, but in the meantime I was wondering if anybody had some recommendations for good makeup tutorials. I'm pretty much totally clueless about good makeup techniques -- from how to pick out lipsticks to how to put on dark eyeshadow so it doesn't look like you have a black eye -- so anything is awesome, but I'm most interested in pretty basic stuff.

As promised.

- Fashion Tips From Comic Strips Yes, that is a SNORLAX DRESS, omg. From her sidebar: WHAT TO EXPECT : Heroic haute messes. Cat burglar couture. Sass in masks. Clothes combat. Sidekicks in sweet kicks. Model turns and spinning transformations. Basically.
- Hchom Hchom is Marian Churchland's art blog, and under the "clothing" tag you can find a goblin modeling the clothes she wants. Sometimes the clothes exists in real life, sometimes they don't. But they're always rad.
Scrapscallion!
Nov. 4th, 2011 04:23 pmI just found Scrapscallion: Fashion for Goofy People on Tumblr.
The "About" section explains:
Scrapscallion is a fashion advice blog for people who don’t give a fuck what Joan Rivers thinks. I will, however, teach you to the secrets of robot-fighting couture and how to customize your cloche for a night at the post-apocalyptic speakeasy on the moon.
Which was all I needed to know.
I set up a DW feed,

Blog recs, please
Oct. 24th, 2011 12:29 pmWhat nerd/geek style blogs are there out there? Or which ones, if not geek-specific, handle personal style and fashion from an eccentric or offbeat perspective? Or, hell, which ones do you just like?
Hit me with your best recs, people.

The Sartorial Nerd
The tagline is "Feminism. Fashion. Science. Fiction."
The blogroll on the profile page looks worth exploring too.

Halloween Costumes
Oct. 27th, 2010 02:14 pmPicked them out already? Going to throw something together last minute? Going nerdy, sexy, or just plain cool?
I'm a big Halloween person. It's my favorite holiday. I love it so much I dress up all week in various costumes (today I'm a steampunkish can-can dancer). Sometimes it involves me sewing, sometimes it's stuff I buy from crappy temp Halloween stores, and sometimes it's all normal clothes put together inventively. However you can costume, I've done it. This has given me something of a reputation as "the costume person" with my friends and colleagues, so it's not too surprising for me to get a call before some Halloween party, with someone asking how to look like a robot, or if I have a pair of devil horns they can borrow (yes, and they have sequins).
So I figured I would offer my best advice, for those of you thinking about costuming this glorious holiday.

Style Post: Warehouse 13
Sep. 19th, 2010 02:33 pmJust got myself caught up on Warehouse 13 episodes, and it reminded I had meant to make a style kind of post about my two favorite characters on the show. Because they are so very nerdpunk. XD Keep in mind that one of the characters is mildly spoilery for Season 1, so I put them first so you can skip to the less spoilery one.

Fashion is Technology is Awesome
Sep. 16th, 2010 03:02 pmJust a few techie fashions.
But the gem is I really want a LilyPad Arduino now. It's actually rather economical, and conductive fibers?! FUN. This would be interesting for some of my sewing/costume projects.

Humbly seeking fashion advice
Sep. 10th, 2010 09:52 amBecause I'd like to become a bit more cohesive with my style. Well, and define my style for myself. It feels like the right time to start thinking about this.
Anyway! I've been thinking about what I like. "hippie" and "bollywood" (much, much more hippie) are definitely general influences for me. I really love most of the stuff on
forestlace and I must say I'm drawn to particularly Pre-Raphaelite/American Romantic influences (with a bit of the Gothic--not "Goth" really, but "Gothic"), but I need to keep my wardrobe practical, meaning some slacks and tailored shirts for the lab, not to mention I'm pretty much devoted to comfortable boots for daily use (to and around campus is at least 3 miles a day, sometimes more and I'm prone to blisters, callouses and shallow lacerations--ew).
Afterchaotic daydreaming careful deliberation, I like the idea of "ruggedly feminine" as a descriptor, but it's less corset-doubles-as-tool-belt (though that freaking rocks) and more Aerith from FFVII.
In conclusion, this random musing distills down the question: how do you combine the feminine with the practical (if you do)? Where does your inspiration for your clothes come from? Books, magazines, Internet, or real life? All of the above? Do you have a name or adjective for your style? Any hidden gems of clothing stores you've discovered? Particular shopping strategies?
And, of course, cool pictures are always appropriate.

Cult of Less
Aug. 18th, 2010 10:24 amSomehow the word "cult" is very apt.
I have mixed feelings about the idea of living out of a harddrive. Mainly because, well, it's a tinged privileged. There's one form of not having a lot of stuff due to poverty, but somehow it's just not as hip as this. :/
And what about art? I happen to sew a lot now, and that requires a certain amount of stuff to do properly. I think the majority of my accumulation of stuff is related to costuming or the fact I collect art. Am I tied down because of this, or is it a part of the enrichment of my life? I rather like making things, and a stash is very helpful for that (instead of having to go out and buy stuff every time I make something... often I can adapt what I have around).
As much as I love the digital world, there are things I enjoy about the physical one. What about you?

Cultural Appropriation and Fashion
Apr. 19th, 2010 09:35 amA very good thinky post on this topic.
Without my own commentary, as I can't think of anything to add.

Some Etsy Finds!
Apr. 12th, 2010 12:46 pmSo, my 25th birthday is coming up next month, and this usually means my windowshopping increases. Thankfully I have enough self control with most things, but I figured I'd share some of my favorites. Click on the images to go to the site where it's sold!

Ethical Considerations
Apr. 6th, 2010 04:20 pmI know, I haven't been around here in a while, but I can across several articles all at once that got me thinking about it. How often do you think about where your clothes come from? What sorts of things would you look up? Materials? Where it's made?
And how often do you put your money where your mouth is?
Anyway, here's the articles that made me think:
- How Green is Your Bamboo?
- Do you know what's behind Urban Outfitters?
- The Truth about American Apparel
Same person writing all those, but they link together. I promise a picspam later. XD

Whatfor Inspiration?
Feb. 22nd, 2010 04:45 pmFigured it was about time I compiled some things I watch to keep nerdpunkish. Clothes/fashion focused, I may do a not clothes one, but I don't follow a terrible lot of those... so maybe someone else should put that together. XD
Personal Style
- Academic Chic
Three chicks that prove you can be smart, and stylish. E is of particular interest to the minimalist set as she manages minimalism without looking like a robot. Yay for that!
- Advanced Style
Because I think that only looking at what young people wear is silly.
- Fashion for Nerds
If I lived in San Francisco and made about twice the money I make now....more on the smart and stylish route, but a lot quirkier than Academic Chic.
- Gala Darling
Extremely glittery almost cartoon of a person, fun to watch because she obviously lives in a completely different dimension from the rest of the world. Like her because she tends to be rather positive, even if I really want to feed her (honey "raw" foods will not sustain you, eat a hamburger please).
- The Glamorous Grad Student
Another of the "academics that don't look like they dress in the dark" blogs I follow, this one has a few features I've become fond of, particularly the "City Chic" series, which interviews people that live (and presumably go to school) in different cities around the world. This is refreshing to me, as the majority of style bloggers either live in New York or LA, and tend to forget about the rest of the world because of this.
- Wicked Whimsy
Has an eye towards alt fashion (and obviously doesn't work in an office XD) but has some fun discussions, good links, and one of the few articles that talks about tattoo etiquette. Breaks most fashion rules, and I think that's fun.
- Blue Collar Catwalk
Adorable chick who also lives somewhere in the midwest area, is short, and has to shop at Target much like I do. Gets props for looking stylish with limitations a lot of the other style blogs don't have or address much.
General Style
- Put This On
Mens-fashion focused, covers anything from stuff on eBay to reader questions, to funny little tidbits. Blog for what is supposed to be a show, they have one episode so far, about jeans.
- Metro Style Men
There really aren't a lot of mens fashion blogs out there, and this one is pretty decent, and at the very least, POSTS REGULARLY. Like the name suggests, is aimed at the more metro type guys, and tends to have stuff that I, as a girl, would wear as well. Pretty solid "look at the pretties!" type of reporting.
- {this is glamorous}
Shamelessly pretty stuff. Really, it's just fun to look at, and tends to be in cute little themes. Not just clothes, either!
- The Midwasteland
Dedicated to Midwestern fashion (based in Chicago) and the fact that yes, it does exist. Also talks about fun events in the Chicago area, if you're anywhere near there (I sort of am). I am particularly fond of the fact they don't ignore winter like a lot of other places do (I used to live much closer to Chicago, so, I feel them). XD
Street Style
- Swagger 360
Tired of pale hipsters? This is pretty much the opposite of pale hipsters in street fashion. What I like most about a lot of these people are they look like they could kick my ass as well as dress interestingly. New York focused, I believe, shows men and women.
- The Sartorialist
There's a lot of polarization with The Sartorialist; people either find his subjects boring and his choice of them to be highbrow and snobbish, or they think he's the best thing since sliced bread. All I know is that when I think I may be bored, he pulls out someone interesting, and since he's an older man taking the pictures, his aesthetic tends to appeal to me anyway, as I am an old man deep down. Your mileage my vary. Has men and women.
- The Streets Walker
Isreali street blog, part of a search I did when I was fed up with seeing the same three hipsters in another street fashion blog. Somehow they seem to be able to pull off things that are looking fresh to me right now. Shows men and women.
Sustainable Style
- Wardrobe Refashion
Take a pledge not to buy new stuff and post about it. Or just watch what other people do. Can have an artsy craftsy vibe sometimes, but I've seen some really cool stuff done on here before. Good place if you're trying to find crafty people with blogs as well, as a lot of these people also post at their own places.
-
t_shirt_surgery
Livejournal community dedicated to doing crazy stuff with t-shirts. The younger, funkier version of Wardrobe Refashion in a lot of ways.
Fashion Criticism/Discussion
- Project Rungay
In addition to their wonderful recaps of several reality shows (and a couple non-reality ones now too) they have some great stuff on runway shows and what famous people are wearing. Not monotonious like a lot of other ripping sites can get, and usually really freaking hilarious too. Mostly focuses on women's fashion, with the occasional dip into men's.
- The Demoiselles
Big into the body positive issues, they look at fashion with an eye at how it would affect those that aren't a size 2 and 6 feet tall. Female-focused.
- Rip It to Shreds!
Most heavy on the criticism side, is rather entertaining and seems to talk about a lot of the other things I don't "get". Not afraid to point out with something is ridiculous, and favors a sort of glam 70s meets Kelly Bundy aesthetic herself, which I think is fun (if not MY taste). Just started watching, so we'll see!
I probably forgot something (I process a fuckton of information each day... really) but this is a fun set of links, eh? I didn't even get into the tumblrs I follow. XD Edit: Whoops, almost forgot Put This On...

Zen and the Middle Way of Stuff
Feb. 17th, 2010 10:33 pmSo, I used to watch a lot of decluttering and productivity blogs, because I come from a hoarding background and I want to avoid becoming that. As that is scary! But there is always too much of a good thing, and that thing can also be nothing. It's very fetishistic approach to something that's really supposed to make your life easier.
Surely there has to be a middle ground between this:

and this:

I'm discovering my level. I like a little clutter. There, I said it. I'm a magpie, I like to have things around me. But I also like to be able to move around, and if I'm spending all my time maintaining my things, they are too much work. Having lived in rather small spaces for the past six years means there is a critical mass. Floor space? Needed. Sterile walls? Not.
Your mileage my vary.

The Uniform Syndrome
Feb. 10th, 2010 03:26 pmI have to be honest. Anytime I see something that essentially recommends you create a uniform for yourself, I sort of want to gnash my teeth. Granted, this sort of thing can apply to any part of your life, but when simplification and unclutteredness get to the point of sterile and boring, I just can't get on board.
I say this because for much of my early working period of my life, I had to wear a uniform. Sure there is a bit of simplicity to it, but lord, it gets boring. In fact, I loathe wearing black pants now because of this boring.
Where is the line between simple and easy and boring?

Home for the Holidays: Part I
Dec. 21st, 2009 09:45 pmI think my mom does a fun job with Christmas decorating, and that the house looks nice. Not my style at all, but lovely nonetheless. And I talk about clothes too much on here. Click pictures to embiggen.
